If you haven’t seen the epic motion picture Gladiator – drop what you’re doing and go see it now. If you have seen it, though, then you’re in luck. Software manufacturer Playtech has released an online slot game based on the famous 2000 movie. And while you may have expected more from the visuals and the design, you will at least get to see your favorite and perhaps least favorite characters on the reels. There’s Commodus – the antagonist, and Proximo, as well as Lucilla and the main character’s friend and fellow gladiator – Juba. There’s a pretty epic soundtrack to help convey the spectacular atmosphere that the movie conjured. But it’s certainly not the original soundtrack, unfortunately. You can see the outlines of the top of the Colosseum against the setting sun in the backdrop. And that’s pretty much everything you will have to look at, if we don’t count the reels themselves.

As you will be sure to notice, the layout is quite traditional and features 5 reels and 3 rows – the regular grid. There are 25 paylines available in total, but you will have all the freedom you need to play with as little as only 1 payline, if you so choose. Likewise, you will have the same flexibility setting your desired betting amount. Players can adjust the coin value, as well as the number of coins they would like to wager per payline. As for the symbols here, you will notice they include the lower value playing card icons. Each symbol is a gold number or letter and fits in with the theme quite nicely. Following these are the mid and high value character symbols. First are Proximo and Juba, who are both of the same value. After them is the Roman Popularis politician Gracchus. Finally, we have Lucilla and her evil brother Commodus. Commodus offers the highest payouts on these reels, so you can pocket up to 5,000 coins by landing 5 of him on a payline. And though the main character, Maximus, is not here, his widely recognizable helmet is. It is the game’s Wild symbol and such it can replace any of the other symbols, save for the Scatter. However, it can only appear on the middle reels 2, 3 and 4.

Special features and other extras

The Wild symbol we just described also happens to double as a Bonus symbol. This means that it will be able to trigger the Gladiator Bonus feature. And in order for you to do that, you will need to land all three Bonus Wilds during the same spin on the middle three reels. As a result, you will enter a new screen, where you will see a total of nine different helmets. They will look different: some will be in bronze, other in gold or silver. This is a Pick Me game and you will need to select some of the helmets, each of which will receive a certain cash prize. At the end of the feature the amounts will add up and you will receive your total prize.

Aside from the Bonus symbol, Gladiator also boasts a Scatter in the shape of the Coliseum. Unlike the Bonus Wild symbol, however, this one can appear in any position on the reels. And in order to make the best of it, you will need to land at least three of these symbols. This will activate the Coliseum Bonus. Again, you will enter a new screen with a grid of 4 by 5 symbols. Starting from the bottom row, you will need to choose a symbol on each row. That will reveal the prize you get. Each row corresponds to a certain prize type, such as freespins, multipliers, extra Scatters and Wilds. You can also gain an additional three symbols if you manage to land Commodus on the middle reel during the feature. Last but not least, this game also boasts its very own Gamble feature. You can take advantage of it after any winning spin to gamble your prize and potentially double it. It’s a simple side game of guessing the correct playing card color.

Gladiator – Conclusion

Gladiator is an entertaining slot game in terms of the interesting features it offers. Being able to customize the freespins round the way you can here is pretty creative, in our opinion. It also adds more to the overall excitement. We do, however, believe that there could have been more added to the design of the game. After all, it does center on an action-packed blockbuster.
